4D: MOTION GRAPHICS

1. Research + Learning;

I want to approach this project as an opportunity to experiment with a selection of different mediums and tools that I'd like to improve at or try for the first time, and then combine them all into one cohesive animation/ motion graphic. I'm probably going to start off with following a bunch of tutorials and then trying to incorporate my own ideas into them.

The song;

Things I want to experiment with;

- lino/ etching sections ,, id draw out the frames them make them all into prints ,, cool texture overlayed as a multiply layer or something ,, strobe lighting
- after effects
- stop motion -- flowers growing then decaying,, similar to what zoe suggested ,, ties in elements from album cover
- fisheye effect,, test some stuff out with a projector
- type
- felt tip/ natural textures
- explore established motifs -- e.g. strong backlight, flowers, thorns etc.
- paper cutouts ,, sand ,,
- hight contrast - b+w

Mini Test;

I followed the tutorial above to get a basic feel for blender before I attempted to make anything myself.

2. Motion Graphics

⟡ Blender;

Each thorn is made up of four components - the stem, the individual thorns, the armature and a segmented plane. This design was reached after a lot of trial and error, and several failed attempts.
The plane stretches the entire length of the armature, with each segment aligned with a bone. Every bone withing the armature is linked to the edge of the next plane segment along from its position with a location modifier, which is what allows the armature to follow the curve path, with a parent bone that controls its position along the curve. I modelled a single thorn which I then duplicated (and rotated randomly) up the length of the stem; each thorn is parented to a single bone within the armature that corresponds to its position and set slightly in from the stem. The stem is made of one long cylinder joined with a ico-sphere at the end, and is parented to the armature.

Above is my first attempt at making and baking an object space normal map, which I then painted over to give the shading on the model a painterly look. It didn't end up being visible in the end result due to the lighting.
